to optimize smart use
and provide a sense of safety

Schell Industries was looking for the ideal hospital bed that is pleasant and practical for healthcare professionals in daily use and in which the patient feels safe and secure. In order to meet all technical standards, an extensive program of requirements (PoR) was followed and we integrated smart features in the bed. The design is a clear difference made to the look and feel of the exterior and the space which is in the patient. The exterior was given a practical, medical radiation, while the inside just gave a softer, so that the patient is in a protective cocoon waa n t.

The approach of the project

In collaboration with NPK Design , Scope Design first mapped out the competition and context. With the help of the V isual Brand Language Tool , the wishes of the client were made clear and the design could start. In order to meet all technical standards, an extensive program of requirements(PoR) was followed and we integrated smart features in the bed. We did this, for example, by placing an ingenious mechanism in the side guard, which makes it compact and collapsible. By hiding technology that was previously visible in the design and by choosing curved head and foot boards, we created a pleasant environment for the patient. 

THE DESIGN RESULT

The design is a clear difference made to the look and feel of the exterior and the space where the patient is. The exterior was given a practical, medical look, while the inside received a softer appearance. The design makes it so that medical professionals can make more efficient use of the surrounding space. At the same time, the smart mechanism ensures the bed can be adjusted in height. Patients have an easier time getting in and out and medical professionals are at an ergonomically convenient height to work with their tools and patients. For patients, the hospital bed offers a comfortable and safe area that feels like a cocoon in a medical environment. The design has been awarded international design awards (Red dot and IF).
